SYSGO released version 3.4 of their PikeOS real-time operating system. The new RTOS extends SMP functionality, supported multi-core platforms and safety certification capabilities. The PikeOS v3.4 will be available this month.
eSOL has completed prototype development of a real-time OS (RTOS) for many-core processors, tentatively called Many-Core real-time OS (MCOS). According to eSOL, MCOS will be the world’s first commercial RTOS for embedded many-core processors. eSOL’s MCOS is currently in use on the Renesas Electronics RH850-based MPU implemented on FPGAs with 16 hardware threads in four CPU cores (the virtual equivalent of 16 CPUs).
SYSGO launched version 5.2 of the ELinOS Industrial Grade Linux. ELinOS 5.2 includes new features and up to date components to the ELinOS embedded Linux product line. ELinOS v5.2 features over 230 new or updated packages. The embedded Linux development environment is available now. The six families of supported processors are the x86, x86_64, PowerPC, ARM, SPARC V8 and MIPS32. ELinOS 5.2 is available for Linux and Windows hosted platforms.
ThreadX-Lite RTOS is a new, single-user license that targets the ARM Cortex-M series microcontrollers. The ThreadX-Lite real-time operating system is a subset of ThreadX RTOS and contains many ThreadX features and capabilities. ThreadX-Lite is packaged in a compact object library designed with IAR Systems for use with the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE. The Express Logic ThreadX-Lite is available exclusively through IAR Systems for $4,500 per seat, with no run-time royalties.
Mentor Graphics unveiled the latest version of their Nucleus Real Time Operating System (RTOS). Nucleus v3 features a certified IPv6 Ready networking stack and security protocols, a variety of wireless communication options (such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee), and built-in power management capabilities. Mentor Nucleus Real Time Operating System is ideal for power conscious, battery powered applications.
Real Time Engineers Ltd. launched version 7.0 of FreeRTOS, which is a free real time MCU operating system. The latest version of the open source embedded RTOS includes a new software timer implementation. The timer enables callbacks to be executed in a task context (instead of interrupt context). It does not consume any processing time or generate any run time overhead unless a timer has actually expired. FreeRTOS v7.0 is backward compatible with FreeRTOS V6.x.x.
Wind River announced version 6.9 of VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS). VxWorks 6.9 features 64-bit computing support (in data and code execution) and improved multi-core processing support in both symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) and asymmetrical multiprocessing (AMP) configurations. VxWorks 6.9 is the first commercial-grade RTOS to fully support 32-bit and 64-bit processing on Intel Architecture. VxWorks 6.9 will be available in March. 64-bit VxWorks RTOS is ideal for telecommunications (such as network infrastructure equipment), industrial and medical applications (like high-definition imagery), and aerospace and defense applications (like highly complex radar, sonar and sensors).
SYSGO rolled out version 5.1 of the ELinOS embedded Linux RTOS. ELinOS 5.1 supports the x86, PowerPC, ARM, SH, SPARC V8 and MIPS64 processors. ELinOS 5.1 is available for Linux and Windows hosted platforms. The 5.1 release features integration of several major kernel releases, including 2.6.34 with full 64-bit target support, latest GCC 4.4 toolchain, and support for major architectures such as Intel, PowerPC, ARM, MIPS64 and SPARC V8. ELinOS 5.1 is available now.
Wind River rolled out the Wind River VxWorks Cert Platform, which is a combination of the VxWorks DO-178B and IEC 61508 safety critical platforms. The Wind River VxWorks Cert Platform supports C++ and real-time processes (RTP). VxWorks Cert is ideal for safety critical applications that must be certified to the stringent requirements of RTCA DO-178B and EUROCAE ED-12B (Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification) and IEC 61508 and other related software standards. Wind River VxWorks Cert Platform is available now worldwide. The VxWorks DO-178B Platform and VxWorks 61508 Platform will no longer be availabe as separate, standalone platforms.
FemtoLinux is a new Linux flavor optimized for real-time embedded systems. With FemtoLinux, critical Linux applications run in kernel mode. This results a low system call and interrupt-to-application latency and overhead. FemtoLinux also simplifies RTOS-to-Linux porting significantly — RTOS applications can be ported to embedded Linux without drastic changes to the software architecture. FemtoLinux is available now for the ARM architecture. MIPS and PowerPC ports are in the works.
