Kotura Ultra Variable Optical Attenuator Module in a pluggable Small Form Package (SFP-VOA)

Kotura recently announced the Ultra Variable Optical Attenuator Module in a pluggable Small Form Package (SFP-VOA). The product integrates an optical power monitor function to provide feedback to the Ultra VOA in a control loop design. The 20-pin SFP package means that designers can better utilize board space by moving the attenuation function to the front panel.

The SFP-VOA consists of a single channel electrically controlled fast variable optical attenuator (VOA). It includes an integrated 5% tap and photodetector for monitoring the optical output signal. The entire assembly is housed in standard pluggable SFP MSA package. The VOA can be controlled via an I2C digital interface (digital control) or by electrical inputs to control pins connected to the internal driver of the SVOA and the photodetector (analog control). The device also includes an internal EEPROM memory with factory calibration data.

Based upon silicon photonics, Kotura’s Ultra VOAs have very fast response times of less than one microsecond. The high-speed performance enables functions such as signal modulation, transient suppression and fast power control in WDM agile networks. Kotura VOAs are very reliable. They have no moving parts and have logged over one billion device hours in optical networks around the world.
