Microchip Power-Line Modem PICtail Plus Daughter Board Development Kit

Microchip Technology introduced their Power-Line Modem (PLM) PICtail Plus Daughter Board Development Kit. The new Microchip kit enables products to communicate using the same wiring that provides power. The PLM PICtail Plus Daughter Board Development Kit is compliant with the utility frequency band. The kit features two daughter boards, two sets of high-voltage adapter cables, royalty-free schematics, demo code and software in source-code format. The kit is available now for $225.

PLM PICtail Plus Daughter Board Features

  • Enables communication over power-lines
  • Uses Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation scheme
  • Interfaces to Microchip Explorer 16 Development Board
  • Operates in the CENELEC A utility frequency band at a carrier frequency of 72 kHz
  • Communicates at a rate of 6 kilobits per second (kbps)
  • Software modem runs on the dsPIC33F Digital Signal Controller (DSC)
  • Utilizes an Analog Front End (AFE) to interface to the AC power mains
  • Communication nodes utilizes a high voltage (HV) adapter cable to connect Soft-Modem to AC mains
  • HV adapter cable incorporates circuitry required for noise-filtering and isolation from the power-line
  • Operates on 5V and 9V power supply
  • Modulation and demodulation in software
  • Variable transmit power level setting
