Ralink RT35x2 Dual-Band 2-stream 802.11n Solutions

Ralink Technology Corporation (TSE:3534) introduced the RT3562, RT3572 and RT3592 dual band, 2-stream IEEE 802.11n solutions. The new family is ideal for embedded multimedia applications, PCs, notebooks, and broadband gateways. The RT35x2 integrates a CMOS RF front-end, media access controller (MAC), baseband processor (BBP) and host interface into a single chip that fully complies with IEEE 802.11n draft 7.0 and IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards. With Ralink’s optimized RF architecture and patented baseband algorithms, the RT35x2 series provide reliable wireless connectivity and extended wireless coverage with industry-leading throughput and low power consumption. Reference design modules and software drivers for the new family are available now. The supported Operating Systems (OS) include Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Mac OS X and Linux. Samples will be available in Q1 2009.

The RT35x2 family of dual-band single chips enables operations of connected multimedia devices in the 5GHz band, where lower interference results in higher throughput, while leaving data-centric networking devices operate in the 2.4GHz band at the same time. The 2-stream capability in this family takes advantage of the MIMO techniques specified in IEEE802.11n standard and delivers the high throughput and link quality, which are paramount for wireless multimedia applications. With the addition of the RT35x2 series, Ralink enriches its complete portfolio of Wi-Fi chip sets for the networking and multimedia applications in the digital home. The RT35x2 series integrate multiple security engines on-chip, including WPA, WPA2, Wi-Fi Protected Set-Up and QoS (802.11e and WMM), enabling a rich feature set to support different security modes of operation required for voice, video and data transmission.

Within the new RT35x2 family, the RT3562 has a PCI interface and an intelligent MAC, which deploys a highly efficient DMA engine and a hardware accelerator to offload packet processing burden from the host processor. Being one of the industry’s smallest USB single chip solutions, the RT3572 is ideally suited for USB-equipped consumer electronics, wireless broadband gateways and mobile PCs. The RT3592 is a PCIe solution that addresses all segments of the thriving notebook market, ranging from entry level ultra mobile PCs to high-end gaming machines.
