Semtech SX8723 Ultra Small Data Acquisition Device

Posted by Ken Cheung in Industrial on Wednesday, February 13, 2008

The SX8723, from Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC), is an ultra-small data acquisition device that uses the company's ZoomingADC(TM) signal amplification circuitry to lower the cost of implementing portable sensing systems by allowing manufacturers to use lower-cost sensors without sacrificing accuracy. The SX8723 converts analog sensor data into a digital signal for processing and is capable of direct connections with a wide array of pressure, chemical or magnetic sensors making it one of the most versatile data acquisition devices available on the market. The device is designed to operate off of a single Li-ion battery without loss of its 16-bit precision, even with a depleted battery. The SX8723 is available immediately in production quantities and is priced at $1.98 each in 10,000 piece lots.

The SX8723 features Semtech's ZoomingADC, a 10-bit preamplifier for the ADC that allows the device to "zoom in" (with a programmable gain from 0.1 to 1000) on a small portion of the analog signal and apply the full 16-bit ADC to only that part of the signal. The preamplifier delivers the highest gain on the market and has a unique offset control mechanism, giving designers the freedom to achieve a given level of sensitivity using lower cost sensors.

The device features two differential inputs or four single-ended inputs and two digital I/Os to interface directly with up to four sensors that can be a mix of pressure, magnetic and chemical, making the device truly a "sensing platform" that can be deployed across a manufacturer's complete range of sensors.

The SX8723 can be embedded directly inside a sensor enclosure. It is available in a 4×4 mm MLPD12 leadless 12-pin package that can be soldered with regular SMD soldering process. The SX8723 is RoHS and WEEE compliant.
