Synopsys, UMC Create 65nm Multi-voltage RTL-to-GDSII Reference Flow
Synopsys, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNPS), a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design and manufacturing, and UMC (NYSE: UMC)(TSE: 2303), a world-leading semiconductor foundry, announced the release of a 65-nanometer (nm) hierarchical, multi-voltage RTL-to-GDSII reference design flow. The flow is based on Synopsys’ Galaxy(TM) Design Platform and features the IC Compiler place-and-route solution and the Design Compiler® Ultra topographical synthesis solution for comprehensive design implementation support. Key features of the reference flow include support for power management with multi-voltage design and power gating, as well as design-for-manufacturing (DFM) capabilities with the addition of critical area analysis (CAA).

ST Announces ST21F384 Secure Microcontroller with Embedded Flash
STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) announced a new secure microcontroller (MCU) based on embedded Flash memory, which is the first in the world to be produced using 90nm (90 nanometer) process technology. The ST21F384 – the first secure micro within ST’s established ST21 smartcard platform, optimized for 2.5G and 3G mobile communications – uses Flash memory in place of mask ROM for its program memory, to provide increased flexibility and shorter lead times for manufacturers, coupled with increased cost-efficiency from its 90nm production.

Mentor Graphics Adds SystemVerilog Support to HDL Designer
Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ:MENT) announced that, in support of the growing adoption of the SystemVerilog standard, its HDL Designer(TM) Series product has been extended to provide a platform for implementing SystemVerilog. The Mentor Graphics HDL Designer Series product is used to accelerate register transfer level (RTL) design reuse and optimize design creation, synthesis, and verification processes for complex application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) designs. Today, up to 80% of new ASIC and FPGA designs reuse RTL code from previous designs. The HDL Designer Series product formulates an optimum design-to-verification environment for creating and managing complex designs using VHDL, C/C++, PSL, Verilog, mixed-languages, and now, SystemVerilog.

NI Releases Multicore Controllers for PXI and PXI Express Systems
National Instruments (Nasdaq:NATI) announced the release of the NI 8352 and NI 8353 high-performance, multicore-based, server-class controllers for use in PXI or PXI Express systems. The NI 8352 and NI 8353 rack-mount controllers can be bundled with the appropriate MXI-Express or MXI-4 remote controllers for remote control of PXI or PXI Express chassis. The controllers offer high computing performance and make it easy to achieve high sustainable I/O bandwidth of up to 832 MB/s when bundled with a MXI-Express kit. With standard redundant array of independent disk (RAID) – configured hard drives for Windows-based systems, these controllers are ideal for high-end test and measurement applications.

Digi Unveils Multipoint XPress Ethernet Bridge for Industrial Networks
Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII) introduced the Multipoint XPress(TM) Ethernet Bridge (XEB) for wirelessly connecting multiple Ethernet devices in a single network when Wi-Fi range is insufficient, when an Ethernet cable is impractical or too costly to install or when industrial grade, highly resilient wireless connectivity is needed. The Multipoint XEB makes it easy to connect equipment like industrial programmable logic controllers (PLCs), electronic LED signs, security cameras, Internet kiosks and other Ethernet-enabled devices wirelessly, securely and cost effectively. It joins Digi’s Drop-in Networking family of solutions that provides end-to-end wireless connectivity to commercial grade electronic devices in locations where wired infrastructure does not exist or satisfy customer needs.

Texas Instruments Introduces LED Drivers for High Quality Video
Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) introduced two 16-channel, constant-current sink, light-emitting diode (LED) drivers with dot correction and grayscale on one integrated circuit (IC) for high-quality video. The drivers give designers increased system reliability and dynamic brightness control to enhance the resolution for large-panel mono-, multi- or full-color LED displays, LED signboards and display backlighting.

LatticeECP2M FPGA Powers Technolabs CIPHOP 900 IP Digital Radio System
Lattice Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: LSCC) announced that Technolabs S.p.A. has selected the LatticeECP2M(TM) FPGA for use in its next generation “fast Ethernet over radio” microwave radio platform, the CIPHOP 900. The LatticeECP2M FPGA will be used to process the 10/100BaseT Ethernet data that is transmitted by the radio link after being processed by the modem demodulator.

DRC Reconfigurable Processor Unit Features Impulse C-based Acceleration
DRC Computer Corporation, the leading provider of dynamically reconfigurable coprocessor modules (Sunnyvale, CA), and Impulse Accelerated Technologies, Inc. maker of the popular Impulse C optimizing C-to-FPGA compiler (Kirkland, WA) announced the release of a highly integrated platform support package to compliment DRC’s RPU. The RPU is also used in the Cray XT5 Hybrid Computing Platform. DRC will be demonstrating Monte Carlo algorithm acceleration in their SC07 booth, for visitors involved in image processing, scientific, financial and other areas of high performance computing. SC07, the international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis, is being held November 10 to 16, 2007 in Reno, Nevada. Impulse C will also be featured on a schedule available at the Cray booth.

Computer Dynamics Debuts SealTouch-15 Environmentally Sealed Computer
Further extending the broad range of solutions offered by the company for computing in harsh industrial environments, Computer Dynamics, a GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms company, announced the SealTouch-15 rugged flat panel computer in an environmentally sealed enclosure. Unlike competing products, the Ruggedized SealTouch-15 is designed to be capable of being installed on an arm, for example: its NEMA 12 capability does not require it to be panel mounted into a cutout. Moreover, its low weight of just 28 pounds means that it is transportable and capable of being used in multiple locations.

ABI Research comments on Motorola Investment in UIQ
Recently, Motorola took a stake in UIQ, a user interface solution for mobile devices pre-integrated with the Symbian mobile operating system. Symbian has long been considered a company dominated by the agenda of Nokia; and Motorola’s apparent “buy in” to the ecosystem looks to be (at face value) a knee-jerk reaction to its current poor performance. But ABI Research asks: Why would Motorola entertain strengthening the competitive position of its biggest competitor, Nokia?
