RIKEN, NEC, JST Demonstrate Laser Emission from Artificial Atom
RIKEN, NEC Corporation, and JST (“Japan Science and Technology Agency”) have successfully demonstrated a laser emission from one artificial atom by coupling superconducting quantum bits (“qubits”) to a resonator. The lasing effect was achieved by an extremely simple system – a single “atom” coupled to a resonator – and represents a world first in the use of a superconducting qubit as an artificial atom to generate lasing photons.

Texas Instruments Rolls Out F28335 eZdsp Starter Kit
Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) has made it easy for engineers to evaluate and develop software on its recently introduced floating-point TMS320F2833x digital signal controllers (DSCs) by introducing the F28335 eZdsp(TM) starter kit. Now sampling, the F28335 controller is the industry’s first floating-point DSC, supplying developers of industrial systems with the inherent floating-point advantages of performance and simplified software development over fixed-point devices. In addition to these digital processing solutions, TI offers engineers a broad portfolio of complementary analog solutions for development of greener variable speed motor control, digital power supplies and intelligent sensing applications.

NEC Announces Two 15-Inch LCD Modules for Industrial Equipment
NEC LCD Technologies, along with its sales and marketing channels in Europe and the Americas, NEC Electronics Europe and NEC Electronics America, Inc., introduced two new 15-inch [38 centimeters (cm)-diagonal] amorphous-silicon color thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) modules with extended graphics array (XGA) resolution for industrial equipment such as factory automation controllers, measuring instruments, automatic teller machine (ATM) terminals, kiosks and point-of-sale (POS) systems. The NL10276BC30-32 is a standard product with brightness of 250 candelas per square meter (cd/m2), while the NL10276BC30-33 has brightness of 350 cd/m2. Both modules conform to the Panel Standardization Working Group (PSWG) standards for 15-inch LCD modules.

Microchip Introduces 12 High-Performance, 8-bit Flash Microcontrollers
Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced 12 new high-performance, 8-bit Flash microcontrollers (MCUs), including Microchip’s first USB and LCD MCU families to include an on-chip, high-speed 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) peripheral. The three new families join the general-purpose PIC18F4523 family to provide customers with 16 high-performance PIC18 microcontroller options with high-resolution, on-chip ADCs. The PIC18F8723 high-memory, general-purpose family offers a rich peripheral set and performance of up to 10 MIPS. The PIC18F4553 family adds an integrated full-speed USB transceiver and 12 MIPS performance. Finally, the PIC18F8493 LCD microcontroller family offers integrated LCD drive capability for low-power display applications.

Aricent Creates UMTS Baseband, WiMAX Base Station Software Solution

The Aricent software is the first C programming language implementation of core baseband modules which, combined with Aricent software services, enables porting onto multiple semiconductor platforms including digital signaling processors (DSP) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGA).

Texas Instruments Debuts ADS8317, ADS8326 Analog-to-Digital Converters
Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) introduced a pair of 16-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) featuring 2x better linearity than competing devices (+/-1.5 LSB maximum INL). Combined with low-power operation, best-in-class temperature drift and either an industry-standard MSOP-8 or a 3mm x 3mm SON-8 package, the ADS8317 and ADS8326 provide an easy performance upgrade for portable, battery-powered applications including industrial data acquisition and portable medical instrumentation.
