Apple iMacs Feature IEEE 1394b FireWire 800
Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) introduction of new iMacs with 1394b this week demonstrates that the 1394b standard, also known as FireWire 800, is gaining significant momentum, the 1394 Trade Association said. The two new members of the iMac line include two 1394 ports, one using 1394a (FireWire 400) and the other 1394b. Apple CEO Steve Jobs highlighted the presence of FireWire 800, indicating that 1394b is now on all iMacs. The new models each run on Intel Core 2 Duo processors with clock speeds of 2 GHz and 2.4 GHz, faster than earlier models. The system bus is also faster than in previous iMacsâ€”800MHz compared to 667MHz. The aluminum enclosure for the iMac conforms with Apple’s Mac Pro and Mac mini products.
National Instruments Kicks Off NIWeek 2007

Tolly Group Ranks Metalink’s WLANPlus Chipset First in 802.11n Test
Metalink Ltd. (NASDAQ: MTLK), a provider of high-performance wireless and wireline broadband communication silicon solutions, announced that its WLANPlus(TM) chipset has achieved impressive performance results in independent tests conducted by The Tolly Group. These rigorous tests benchmarked Metalink’s WLANPlus against three products using different 802.11n chipsets. The tests confirmed that the use of Metalink’s solution doubled performance as compared to the closest competitor tested, and in many of the tests by as much as ten-fold. These tests further position WLANPlus as the best-of-breed 802.11n draft 2.0 compliant product and the only one powerful enough to enable high-performance wireless applications.
Device Manufacturers Make Investments in 300mm Fabs
In a recent analysis of its Fab Database reports, SEMI(R) has found that despite the steep pricing declines experienced by memory, device manufacturers continue to invest significantly in additional 300 mm fab capacity. In total, worldwide 300 mm capacity will double from the beginning of this year by the end of 2008 as 25 new 300 mm high-volume fabs come online. By the end of 2008 only 73 -300 mm fabs will provide over 6.2 million wafers per month. The fab landscape is changing; fewer but larger fabs are being constructed.
