NASA Tests James Webb Space Telescope with NI LabVIEW FPGA
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), NASA’s next-generation successor to the Hubble, has passed a crucial milestone toward its 2013 launch with the help of National Instruments (Nasdaq:NATI) LabVIEW FPGA. An important element of the JWST is the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), which is equipped with more than 250,000 microshutters designed to observe thousands of distant galaxies to better understand the origins of the universe. These microshutters are actually microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices that physically open and close for light exposure, similar to shutters on a camera. Engineers at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center have successfully tested the microshutters using LabVIEW FPGA to control the shutters in a test chamber.

BSQUARE Rolls Out SchemaBSP 6.0 for Creating Windows Embedded CE BSP
BSQUARE (Nasdaq:BSQR) is now shipping version 6.0 of SchemaBSP, a development tool for creating Windows(R) Embedded CE Board Support Packages (BSPs) for ARM-based processors. When used with the Microsoft(R) Platform Builder tool, SchemaBSP enables developers to quickly and easily configure BSP source code for an embedded hardware design, reducing board bring-up time by up to 40%. The product now contains over 250 configurable Windows CE software components, including boot loaders, OEM Adaptation Layer (OAL) components, system modules, and device drivers. Drivers are available for Marvell 3xx, 270, and 2xx applications processors, as well as for Intel(R) IOP3xx I/O Processors.

Lattice Expands Support for LatticeMico32 Embedded RISC Microprocessor
Lattice Semiconductor (NASDAQ: LSCC) announced expanded support for its LatticeMico32(TM) 32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor, an open source, soft IP core optimized for Lattice Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Availability of this enhanced solution, including new development tool and peripheral IP support, coincides with the release of Lattice’s ispLEVER(R) version 7.0 design tool suite. Core optimization for the new non-volatile LatticeXP2(TM) FPGA family, the industry’s first “true” 90nm FPGA using on-chip Flash technology, is also now available.

Microvision, Motorola Team on Mobile Pico Projector Display
Microvision (Nasdaq: MVIS) announced that it has signed an agreement with Motorola to develop pico projector display solutions for mobile applications leveraging Microvision’s ultra-miniature laser based display engine, called PicoP(TM). Tiny laser-based projectors are expected to enable a “big screen” viewing experience from mobile devices. By projecting content displayed on the device screen onto a wall, object or even a curved surface, mobile users could easily share Websites or multimedia applications such as movies, personal videos, mobile TV, photographs and presentations with friends or business colleagues.

CSR’s BlueCore Bluetooth Powers Portable Media Player Reference Design
CSR plc announced that its BlueCore Bluetooth technology has been selected by austriamicrosystems for its new mobile entertainment design, aimed at the latest MP3 and portable media players (PMP). CSR’s BlueCore technology enables the PMP reference design to stream music to two or more Bluetooth headsets simultaneously, enabling users to share music wirelessly. The austriamicrosystems design also benefits from CSR’s native MP3 support which offers better streaming audio quality and reduces power consumption. The CSR and austriamicrosystems PMP reference design is now available worldwide.

OMG Adopts Five New Standards
Members of the Object Management Group(TM) (OMG(TM)) met in Brussels, Belgium, during the week of June 25-29, 2007, sponsored by PrismTech, THALES, MEGA, and Interfacing. At this meeting, the OMG Board of Directors voted to adopt five new standards. This meeting was co-located with the inaugural European meeting of the SOA Consortium.
