Electro Scientific Industries Acquires New Wave Research
Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq:ESIO), a leading provider of world-class photonic microengineering solutions, announced it has agreed to acquire New Wave Research, Incorporated (NWR) headquartered in Fremont, Calif., for $36 million net cash outlay, approximately one times NWR’s current annual revenue. NWR, a premier developer and manufacturer of high-end laser-based systems and components, is a market leader in sapphire wafer scribing and laser micromachining.
Cellular M2M Module to Grow by 31%
Global markets for cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) modules will experience a smooth and solid growth trajectory in coming years, according to a new ABI Research study. The compound annual growth rate during the forecast period between 2006 and 2012 is expected to reach 31%. Although cellular M2M module shipment numbers in the worldâ€™s three main industrialized regions â€“ North America (including Mexico), Europe, and Asia-Pacific are approximately equal at present, these markets differ significantly from each other in character.
Melexis, UMC Create Chips for Automobile Applications
Melexis (Euronext Brussels: MELE), a leading Belgium-based manufacturer of automotive semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs), and UMC (NYSE: UMC; TSE: 2303), a leading global semiconductor foundry, announced that their successful collaboration has resulted in the delivery of chips using UMC’s 0.18um eFlash process and eFlash macro. The ICs are aimed at diversified automobile applications, including automotive sensors. Melexis and UMC have been cooperating on this product for several years, and the chip is currently being shipped to auto-module producers for assembly.

ADLINK Technology Inc. announces the PCI-8154, a cost-effective 4-axis pulse train modularized motion control card for controlling steppers, servos, and linear motors. TI Unveils High-Side Measurement, Bi-Directional Monitor with I2C
Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) introduced a high-side measurement, bi-directional current/power monitor integrated circuit (IC) with an I2C interface. Utilizing a zero-drift, auto-zeroing architecture, the INA209 provides a high accuracy current sensing solution that offers one percent maximum accuracy over the – 40C to +85C temperature range, with 100uV maximum offset. The device enables monitoring and control of current, voltage and power in a variety of applications such as servers, telecom equipment, battery chargers, power management, automotive and test equipment.
