L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced that it has acquired Geneva Aerospace, Inc., a leading provider of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, and has agreed to acquire Global Communications Solutions, Inc. (GCS), a leading provider of portable satellite communications equipment and products. Both companies will be included in L-3′s Specialized Products segment.

The SMB113A and SMB117 continue Summit’s unique approach to power supply design by enabling ease-of-use, unparalleled flexibility and high-performance. Using Summit’s PPM ICs, system designers can digitally program the entire multiple output power supply and associated power management functions with a few clicks of a mouse compared to the tedious iterative hardware design of conventional, “hard-wired” analog power solutions.
Renesas Unveils 960-MIPS, 800 MFLOPS Dual-Core Microcontrollers
Renesas Technology America, Inc. announced five new SuperH(R) 32-bit microcontrollers that use multi-core technology to achieve the high levels of performance required by many embedded system applications such as consumer products, industrial equipment, and car audio and navigation systems. The SH7205 and SH7265 devices incorporate two superscalar SH2A-FPU CPU cores and a comprehensive set of on-chip peripherals that includes USB, ATAPI, and image processing engine functions. When the dual-core microcontrollers are operating at their 200 MHz maximum operating frequency, each CPU delivers 480-MIPS (million instructions per second) processing performance in the Dhrystone v1.1 benchmark, and 400-MFLOPS (mega floating point number operations per second) floating-point operation performance.

RTI to Showcase SIMWARE Modeling and Simulation System
Real-Time Innovations (RTI) and NEXTEL Engineering Systems, SL, will be demonstratingâ€”for the first time at any public eventâ€”a working SIMWARE modeling and simulation (M&S) system showing integration between High-Level Architecture (HLA) and Data Distribution Service (DDS) real-time middleware nodes in a distributed missile-simulation application. The objective is to show the real-time performance boost gained by the use of the open-standard DDS middleware within a configuration that remains fully interoperable with existing HLA modules. This provides a completely commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) based environment supporting HLA-based legacy system architectures while enabling predictable, scalable real-time performance, particularly in large and complex distributed designs.
Strategic Test Describes How to Optimize Host PC for Fastest Streaming
Strategic Test has just published an Application Note that describes how to optimize the configuration of a host PC to obtain the fastest streaming to or from hard disks when using Digitizer or Arbitrary Waveform Generator PCI cards. Continuous gap-free streaming of up to 200 MBytes per second is possible using COTS motherboards, RAID controller and fast S-ATA hard disks. For example, such a system would make it possible to record or generate a single 200 MSample per second analog signal with 8-bit resolution for up to 1 hour, or a 10 MSample per second signal for 20 hours. Currently, the only other products offering this performance are based on high-end disk controllers costing at least $8000.
