Intel Targets NAND Flash Memory Market
Intel has been a leader in NOR Flash for over a decade and is now moving aggressively in the NAND Flash market, reports In-Stat. The company is making significant investments in NAND to support its goal of becoming one of the top players in this business, the high-tech market research firm says.

TI Offers MSP430 Experimenter Board for $99
Enabling designers to quickly develop ultra low power medical, industrial and consumer embedded systems using either a highly integrated signal chain on chip (SCoC) MSP430FG4618 or small 14-pin F2013 microcontroller, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced the availability of the MSP430 Experimenter’s Board (part number MSP-EXP430FG4618). Along with the two 16-bit MSP430 devices, the board includes a TI (Chipcon) radio frequency (RF) module connecter for developing low power wireless networks. The board also features a number of input and output options such as a microphone, buzzer, liquid crystal display (LCD), capacitive touch-pad, push buttons, and pin board prototyping space, among others.

Linux to Power 203 Million Mobile Phones
The Linux community is assaulting the mobile phone environment with a two-pronged attack that focuses on commercial operating system solutions and real-time operating system (RTOS) replacement. In a new study, ABI Research forecasts that by 2012, more than 127 million devices will be enabled with a commercial Linux OS, up from 8.1 million in 2007. Additionally, device shipments that incorporate Linux as an RTOS replacement are set to grow to more than 76 million units in 2012, up from nearly zero in 2007.

Hitachi Creates Embedded Database for Devices
Continuing its commitment to innovating ways that let people search the way they think on converged and mobile devices, the Embedded Business Group (EBG) of Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), released Entier 2.0. This new release, which adds to Entier’s already unique and powerful spatial search capabilities, is the first embedded relational database management system (RDBMS) to give developers of applications for converged and mobile devices the ability to incorporate the kind of high speed, advanced data management and sophisticated search capabilities that so far have been available only via massive computing environments such as online search engines.

GE Fanuc Embedded Systems Unveils 6U CompactPCI Single Board Computers
Providing further evidence of the company’s leadership in developing single board computers that respond to customer demand for increased processing performance with lower power dissipation, and the ability to deploy in harsh environments, GE Fanuc Embedded Systems announced the CT11, CP11 and CR11 6U CompactPCI CPU boards with integrated dual core Intel(R) processing technology: versions are available with the Core 2 Duo processor, the Core Duo processor and the Celeron(R) M processor.

AMCC Launches PowerPC 460EX Embedded Processors
Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ:AMCC) announced the newest member of its embedded processor family of products, the PowerPC— 460EX, at this week’s Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose. Based on the Power Architecture(TM) standard, the 460EX is designed for a wide range of high performance applications including multifunction printing, networking, home gateway and general embedded processor requirements.

Samplify Develops Compression Engine for FPGAs
Addressing the growing challenge presented by the widening gap between ever-increasing digitization rates and the fixed-bandwidth infrastructure, Samplify Systems announced the availability of the Samplify compression engine for FPGAs and Samplify for Windows signal analysis tool. Targeting rates from 10 Mega-samples per second (Msps) using PC software, 250 Msps in FPGAs, and up to 60 Giga-samples per second (Gsps) in ASICs, Samplify’s high-speed field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based compression improves system performance and lowers system cost in such real-time embedded applications as COTS, military, medical imaging, homeland security, ATE, test and measurement and data acquisition.

WIN Enterprises Announces MB-09014 ETX CPU Module
WIN Enterprises, Inc., a leading designer and manufacturer of embedded controllers and platforms for OEMs, announces the MB-09014 ETX CPU module for small embedded systems. This economical unit has an onboard 600MHz Intel(R) Celeron(R) processor. It can be paired with a companion 5.25″ disk-size base board (IP-06051) to provide an especially feature-rich platform for a wide range of OEM applications, including medical imaging/monitoring, kiosk/POS, gaming, industrial control, and security monitoring.

AdaCore Rolls Out GNATbench 2.0 for Eclipse 3.2

UNH-IOL Verifies Altera’s Triple-Speed Ethernet MegaCore Function
Altera Corporation (NASDAQ:ALTR) announced that its Triple-Speed Ethernet MegaCore(R) function has successfully verified compliance with the IEEE 802.3 specification by the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL). In addition to the MAC and 1000 BASE-X PCS test suites, the Triple-Speed Ethernet MegaCore function, implemented on Stratix(R) II and Stratix II GX devices, passed the independent lab’s point-to-point interoperability, auto-negotiation and flow control test suites.

osCAN OSEK/VDX-Compliant RTOS Supports Altera Nios II Processor
Altera Corporation’s (Nasdaq: ALTR) Nios(R) II embedded processor is now supported by Vector Informatik’s osCAN, an OSEK/VDX-compliant real-time operating system (RTOS) for the automotive market, the two companies announced. With osCAN support, automotive designers can, for the first time, leverage the flexibility of an FPGA-based embedded processor with the knowledge that they will meet the specifications set by Europe’s top automotive manufacturers.

AnaFocus Eye-RIS Sees with Altera Nios II Embedded Processor
AnaFocus, a leading provider of high-performance vision systems on a chip, has chosen Altera Corporation’s (NASDAQ: ALTR) embedded solutions to develop Eye-RIS, a single-chip camera and image processor, the companies announced. The 0.18-µm device meets the high-performance control and post-screening video requirements of Eye-RIS’s target applications by using Altera’s Nios(R) II embedded processor integrated with AnaFocus’s smart image sensor (SIS) technology.

VMETRO Rolls Out I/O Modules for FPGA-based PMCs
VMETRO has announced a trio of new I/O modules for use with its FPGA-based PMC products. Users can choose the front-end processing appropriate to the application from a dual channel 105 MSPS analog input, a dual channel 210 MSPS analog output or a RS485 module. All three I/O modules integrate into a VMETRO PMC-FPGA03, PMC-FPGA05 or DEV-FPGA05 card. These FPGA-based PMC/PCI boards feature Xilinx(R) Virtex(TM)-II Pro or Virtex(TM)-5 FPGAs and memory banks directly connected to the FPGA for signal and data processing in computationally intensive applications. MBDA Adopts AdaCore GNAT Pro Development Environment
AdaCore announced a global licensing agreement with world-leading missile systems company MBDA. The three-year agreement builds on MBDA’s existing long-term commitment to the Ada programming language by adopting AdaCore’s GNAT Pro development environment as its corporate Ada standard. The initial agreement covers 80 developers, and enables MBDA to add additional licences as needed to flexibly and cost-effectively meet its changing needs.
