Intel Launches Quad-Core Xeon 5300 Series Processors
Commemorating 30 years of delivering products and technology to the embedded computing market, Intel Corporation introduced the Quad-Core Intel(R) Xeon(R) processor 5300 series with extended life cycle support, the first to bring Intel architecture-based quad-core performance to the embedded segment. The quad-core embedded processors are among the 11 quad-core products Intel has brought to market in less than 6 months. Intel also introduced the new Intel(R) IP Network Server NSC2U. Both new products utilize Intel’s latest advanced hardware technologies, including Intel(R) Virtualization Technology and Intel(R) I/O Acceleration Technology.

Adeneo, NXP Team on Windows Embedded CE Solution for LPC MCUs
Adeneo, a Microsoft Windows Embedded Gold Partner with facilities in Europe and in the USA, announced during the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley, the beginning of a strategic partnership with NXP around LPC MCUs. The first joint action linked to this partnership is the development of the reference Windows Embedded CE 6.0 BSPs for LPC3000 MCUs family. A preview of this development has been revealed at ESC West today by NXP and Adeneo, running on phyCORE LPC3180 module from PHYTEC company.

VDC Releases Embedded Integrated Computer Systems Study
Passive backplane-based computer systems continue to dominate the embedded integrated computer systems market – according to VDC’s recently released Global Market Analysis of Embedded Integrated Computer Systems, which studied the market for system-level computer products sold by embedded vendors into six separate vertical markets. Fueled by the overwhelming share of the systems in the military/aerospace vertical, the largest of the vertical markets, passive backplane-based systems accounted for 69%of embedded integrated computer system dollar volume shipments in 2005.

Corvalent, BSQUARE Head Vertical with Windows Embedded Solutions
Corvalent, a pioneer in the design and manufacture of long-life Intel(R)- processor-based motherboards and systems for vertical market applications and BSQUARE (Nasdaq: BSQR), the Microsoft Windows Embedded Systems Integrator of the Year for 2006, have partnered to enable Corvalent to deliver complete Microsoft Windows Embedded-based software solutions for Corvalent’s North American OEM customers.

Microchip Unveils 28-pin, 16-bit Microcontrollers with 64kb Flash
Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced eight new members of the cost-effective PIC24F 16-bit microcontroller family, which extend the line into smaller and lower cost 28- and 44-pin packages with 16 to 64 Kbytes of Flash program memory and up to 8 Kbytes of RAM. The new PIC24FJ64GA002 microcontroller provides more onboard memory than any other 28-pin packaged 16-bit microcontroller. The entire PIC24FJ64GA004 family allows the flexible use of all onboard peripherals, by enabling designers to map them to the pin they desire through the “Peripheral Pin Select” pin-mapping function.

WinSystems Introduces All-Temperature Fanless PC/104-Plus SBC
WinSystems introduced their PPM-GX, a PC/104-Plus compatible single board computer (SBC) based upon the low power, high-integration AMD GX500@1W processor. This SBC operates throughout the temperature range of -40° to +85°C without the need for a fan. The board integrates the CPU, video, Ethernet, USB, COM, LPT, mouse, audio, and keyboard controllers onto one board yet it measures only 3.6″ x 3.8″ (90mm x 96mm). PPM-GX will run x86-compatible software for space- and power-limited embedded designs. It is targeted for the industrial telecommunication, homeland security, transportation, data communication, MIL/COTS and information appliance markets.

Mentor Graphics Precision Synthesis Supports Xilinx Spartan-DSP
Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) announced that its suite of advanced synthesis products supports the newly introduced Spartan(TM)-DSP series from Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX). Synthesis support is available now in Precision(R) Synthesis (release 2006a2) with support in the LeonardoSpectrum(TM) tool suite to follow.

OCP-IP Publishes White Paper on Debug Interface
OCP-IP announced the availability of a white paper discussing an approach to a standardized OCP-bus compliant debug interface. The proposed debug solution is an optional OCP port, implementing a Debug Interface Socket, which can be added to all cores and IP blocks to support a more uniform method of on-chip system analysis and access to embedded information at the core, multicore, and systems levels. The debug interface socket defines several layers of extended functionality to address the diverse and increasing debug needs for software, hardware, and mixed SoC prototyping and is intended to be compatible with other industry standards efforts addressing debug and related on-chip issues.

Insyde Creates Do-It-Yourself Embedded Kit for Intel Architecture
Insyde Software, a provider of UEFI-based firmware, BIOS and engineering services, announced a new firmware solution specifically targeted at the embedded and communications market segments using Intel(R) architecture. The new solution dubbed “InsydeDIY” is aimed specifically at embedded systems makers that are using Embedded Intel(R) Architecture Processors who do not need a complete BIOS implementation, and want to develop a platform-specific set of initialization and boot code themselves. Embedded customers that demand a full-featured BIOS solution or need outside assistance will continue to leverage the company’s flagship and industry leading UEFI Framework product; InsydeH2O(TM).

EDA Vendors to Develop Interoperable PCell Library for AMS Design
Five electronic design automation (EDA) companies announced an agreement to collaborate on the creation and distribution of an interoperable PCell library (IPL). The IPL supports the OpenAccess database from the Silicon Integration Initiative (Si2), and is available now as open-source software that any interested party can use. For the first time in semiconductor industry history, an integrated circuit designer will be able to use the same PCell libraries in tools from all five vendors, plus with OpenAccess-based tools from other vendors or universities, or developed in-house.

Ember Lowers ZigBee Development Cost with InSight USB Link
Ember, a provider of ZigBee networks for smarter, more energy efficient buildings and homes, announced a new USB-based programming tool that is easy to use and lowers the cost of developing ZigBee wireless applications. The new, plug-and-play InSight USB Link includes an inexpensive USB adapter and flash programming software that makes it easier to program Ember’s ZigBee radio modules. Using a USB-enabled PC, customers can connect directly to Ember’s EM250 and EM260 and upload ZigBee applications. Until now, customers used Ember’s more sophisticated InSight Adapter to program the modules via an Ethernet network.

Rabbit Integrates Wi-Fi and ZigBee into RabbitCore Modules
Rabbit Semiconductor is boldly going wireless by offering two new wireless technologies directly integrated in new RabbitCore(R) modules. Customers can now connect their products to the Internet and network their devices without wiring headaches. The new RCM4400W is a Wi-Fi/802.11 based core module that leverages the increasing penetration of Wi-Fi in businesses around the world. The RCM4510W is a ZigBee/802.15.4 based module that taps into the exciting, high growth ZigBee market for low cost, low power wireless sensor networks. NI LabVIEW Real-Time Supports VxWorks RTOS
National Instruments (Nasdaq:NATI) has extended the NI LabVIEW graphical programming environment to now target the Wind River VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS), which has been deployed in more than 350 million devices worldwide including the latest National Instruments CompactRIO controllers. The NI cRIO-9012 and cRIO-9014 controllers combine the productivity of LabVIEW Real-Time and the reliability of the VxWorks device software, making it easy for engineers to rapidly design embedded systems.

Renesas Creates Linux Solution for SuperH 32-bit Microprocessors
Renesas Technology America, Inc. announced a complete Linux(R) solution for key Renesas 32-bit SuperH(R) microprocessors. The Linux solution is available for the SH7354, SH7343, SH7722, and SH7763 series devices, adding a new level of sophistication required in multimedia products, industrial equipment and office automation products. It consists of a Linux Board Support Package (BSP), network protocol stack, and Linux system integration. These software packages offer an excellent out-of-box experience that allows developers of Linux embedded systems to shorten their development time and, thus, get products to market quicker.

MaxStream Unveils XBee Series 2 Mesh-Enabled ZigBee Module
MaxStream(R), a Digi International(R) brand (NASDAQ:DGII), announced the addition of the XBee(TM) Series 2 ZigBee(R) module. Leading the market in easy-to-use embedded ZigBee technology, MaxStream further strengthens its leadership position by adding a module that includes full mesh networking capabilities.

PLX Rolls Out PCI Express Switches with Lower Power Consumption
PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), the leading global supplier of PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) I/O interconnect solutions, has further expanded its broad PCIe portfolio by announcing the industry’s first eight-port, eight-lane and five-port, five-lane switches. Strategic Test Rolls Out Six New Transient Recorder Cards
Strategic Test Corp has released six new Transient Recorder cards in the UF2-4700 series. Using multiple 16-bit ADC’s for true simultaneous sampling, the cards are available with a choice of maximum sampling rates of 100 kS/s, 250 kS/s and 500 kS/s. The cards are available in 8- or 16-channel configurations enabling the user to select the most cost-effective solution with prices from only $160 per channel.

General Vision Inc., which specializes in the research and development of Artificial Vision technologies for consumer, industrial, medical, defense and scientific applications, knew that Avnet Electronics Marketing, an operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), and Actel, the leader in nonvolatile single-chip FPGA solutions, were a winning combination when it came time to produce and distribute its CogniSight(R) line of products. General Vision selected Actel’s flash-based ProASIC3 FPGAs and the design- and supply-chain support solutions of Avnet, its only distribution partner.
