NXP Acquires Cellular Communications Unit from Silicon Laboratories
NXP Semiconductors, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, announced it will acquire the Cellular Communications Business of Silicon Laboratories Inc. (Nasdaq:SLAB) for US$285 million [approximately 220 million Euro equivalent] in cash. NXP may pay up to an additional US$65 million [approximately 50 million Euro equivalent] contingent upon the achievement of certain milestones in the next three years. The assets to be acquired include the RF CMOS technology based transceivers for cellular phones, as well as the monolithic cellular systems chips.

CSR Bluetooth Chip Enables High Quality Headset for $6 eBOM
CSR has launched a new Bluetooth chip and example design that dramatically reduces the cost of Bluetooth headsets and stimulates market demand. CSR’s new BlueVOX-QFN chip, together with all of the necessary components for a Bluetooth mono headset, will cost OEMs only $6 Bill of Materials (eBOM), meaning they can now produce Bluetooth headsets at a fraction of current costs CSR’s BlueVOX-QFN is available now, and headsets using BlueVOX QFN are expected to be on the market by Spring 2007.

Alliacense announced that NEC Corporation has purchased a Moore Microprocessor Patent(TM) (MMP) Portfolio license from The TPL Group. As the first global manufacturer to become an MMP Portfolio licensee in 2007, NEC closely follows in the footsteps of HP, Casio, Fujitsu, Sony, Nikon, Seiko Epson, Pentax, Olympus, Kenwood, Agilent, Lexmark and Schneider Electric, all of whom purchased MMP licenses during 2006.

Optima Creates First Modular MicroTCA Cabinet Enclosure
Optima EPS, an Elma Company, has announced a cabinet enclosure specifically designed for MicroTCA applications. The modular cabinet features a stacked arrangement of open card cages, fan trays, and heat exchangers. Without top or bottom covers, the open card cages allow air to flow through multiple stacks of MicroTCA shelves. The fan trays and heat exchangers cool the cabinet in this modular configuration. Various implementations of card cage shelves, fans, and cooling units can be configured in the cabinet.

Portalify Receives Mobile Data Messaging Patent
Portalify Ltd, a leading provider of mobile data messaging technology for public safety users, announced that it has been issued United States patent 7,127,494 on its key technology for making the development of mobile data services easier. The same technology has previously won patent protection in Finland.
