What's Happened to COTS Adoption?

COTS adoption and the VMEbus are certainly alive and well in the defence industry today. No other combination of procurement concept and technology has stood the test of time so well. The limits of what can be achieved with a COTS VMEbus system are continually being stretched; the future holds much higher backplane data rates, faster processors, perhaps even the incorporation of Gigabit serial technologies for additional system level connectivity and innovative COTS software solutions to provide hardware independence. Yes, VME will remain the worldwide bus of choice.
