Use a PLD and FIFOs to Convert Bus Width

Many applications require a high-speed conversion from one bus width to another. As an example, a system may be capturing video signals and digitizing them into eight bits, yet it uses a 32-bit microprocessor; the 8-bit data has to be stored and reconfigured in some manner to interface with the 32-bit-wide bus. This is an ideal application for FIFO memories. When connected as shown in the figure, four FIFOs plus a simple programmable logic device (SPLD) will provide a flexible and simple solution to the problem of changing 8-bit data into 32-bit data.
