The Global Market for Merchant Computer Boards in Real-Time and Embedded Applications 2001-2002, Volume I: Switch Fabric Architectures

This Executive White Paper addresses Switch Fabric Architectures and certain other point-to-point interconnect technologies. It comprises excerpts from VDC's recent report on this subject. Publicity and press releases over the last year or more seem to imply that switch fabrics are a new and revolutionary technology, destined to change the computing world as we know it. Although the latter may be true, switch fabrics per se, or at least the concept of switch fabrics, have been around for quite a while. What is new is the application of these to chip-to-chip, board-to-board and, to some degree, box-to-box communication, and the particulars of such implementation.
