With their ability to process large amounts of data and centralize information, mainframes became the workhorse of organizations that could afford them. As companies grew, mainframes became overburdened, and enterprises turned to lower cost minicomputers. By distributing the computing load, precious mainframe resources were freed for critical jobs.
