Seamless Integration of Windows 2000 and CompactPCI Hot Swap Platforms

One of the keys to the popularity of CompactPCI is its support for hot swapping – inserting and removing boards without powering down the system. Two years have passed since the adoption of the CompactPCI enabling specification by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) and hot swap capable hardware, including platforms, peripheral boards and CompactPCI interface silicon, is widely available. On the other hand, the availability of hot swap aware software, such as operating systems, device drivers and applications, is lagging way behind. The recent arrival of Microsoft Corporation's Windows 2000 (Win2K), plus a crucial add-in layer for CompactPCI, could dramatically improve this situation.
