Service Availability in Open Availability Architecture: The Role of Management Middleware
The proliferation of technologies and escalating consumer demands for multimedia services are driving the telecom industry toward IP-based, open architecture design. System architects recognize that trying to integrate today's rapidly evolving technologies into a proprietary system design is cumbersome, time-consuming and costly. The market for commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) system components is rapidly growing, but full-scale adoption of the building-block approach is hampered by lack of standardized interoperation between components. This paper introduces efforts currently underway within the industry to meet this challenge by encouraging and creating system architectures that can achieve Service Availability solutions with industry standard hardware and operating systems.
