Simplifying Software Configuration Management in International Telecommunications Products
Competition and the pace of development in telecommunications create new challenges for software configuration management. While international standards define many of the requirements for interfaces and capabilities, there is ample room within the generic standards for "nationalization" of specific behaviors. This poses a challenge in managing a product's software configuration, where there can be hundreds of nationalized variations of the same basic product. This paper compares different approaches to this problem and reports our experience with an approach based on configurable parameters to specify required behaviors for different administrative regions. This approach has the advantages of reducing development costs, certification delays, and support efforts.
