10 Gigabit Ethernet - Technology and Applications

A standard under development by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) P802.3ae Task Force extends the 802.3 Ethernet protocols to an operating speed of 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). The new 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) standard is targeted at applications in the enterprise local area network (LAN), metropolitan area network (MAN), and wide area network (WAN).

This paper describes the workings of the 10GbE standard and the potential applications for 10GbE technology in the deployment of highly scalable enterprise networking solutions both in the LAN and in the WAN.
