Moving Voice and Fax Applications Beyond the PBX and into the IT Mainstream: The Role of Host-Based Media Processing Software

In recent years, voice application vendors have increasingly sought to expand beyond PBX-centric applications such as call center IVR to become an integral component of the enterprise IT infrastructure. Such integration promises increased flexibility and reduced costs of operation for organizations. Two technology advances that have fueled this change are voice over IP, and the emergence of standard, speech-aware voice programming interfaces. Now, removing the need to install and support specialized telephony hardware represents yet another opportunity to integrate voice more fully into general-purpose IT-centric applications. Host-based media (HBM) processing software provides the missing link to bring voice into the IT mainstream. This paper focuses on the attributes necessary for HBM to deliver on this ambitious promise.
