Improving Software Economics in the Aerospace and Defense Industry
Rational Software Corporation has been intimately involved with the pragmatic successes and failures of its customers' software-engineering projects across a broad range of aerospace, defense, and commercial applications for over 12 years. This paper examines three interrelated issues that directly affect the software capability of the aerospace and defense industry, and it summarizes the current maturity of software-engineering practices from Rational's perspective. Advances in software process, improvements in acquisition policy, and a continued focus on Ada must be integrated into a complementary approach to provide breakthrough improvements in the economics of sophisticated software development.
