In-System Programmability of Flash Devices Using the JTAG Po
In-system programmability of Flash devices using the JTAG Port is a hot topic in the embedded computer industry, where functionality, cost, and size are competing with one another for attention from the designers. This paper discusses the difficulties and solutions the author encountered in the course of creating an application to program the Flash Boot Device of the Intel EXPLR I 386EX evaluation board using the JTAG Port of the Intel 386EX microprocessor. Design recommendations that are applicable to all levels of the x86 hardware architecture are discussed, focusing on systems utilizing the RadiSys R300EX, R380EX, and R400EX chipsets. Similar recommendations for Intel Pentium processor designs using the Intel 430HX PCIset chipset are presented.
