High Availability

High availability means different things to different people. This paper is intended to define High Availability concepts and vocabulary in the context of MontaVista's offerings. High availability is measured in terms of the percent of the time the system is available. The measure used is a logarithmic scale based on "nines". A system with 3 nines of availability is available 99.9% of the time, which translates to about 9 hours of unplanned down time per year. The concept of availability incorporates both the concept of reliability (MTTF - Mean Time to Failure) and repairability (MTTR - Mean Time to Repair). For some applications, availability is measured in terms of the total time the system is continuously available, but for purposes of this paper we will distinguish between planned downtime and unplanned downtime, with availability measured in terms of unplanned downtime.
