Features and Benefits of ALU Based Programmable Logic

Part of the evolution of integrated circuit technology is the phenomena of multiple layers of programmable logic structures. Microprocessor, PLA, FPGA and fixed design (ASIC) components have been used together in system designs for over fifteen years. It is only natural that SoC component architectures consider the integration of varying programming methodologies in the same design. This allows the necessary tradeoff of flexibility, area and performance for the different modules in the SoC. But what are the right programmable logic styles for SoC development? Having many styles in the same component improves flexibility and reuse but may overly complicate the design process.
