Fabrics and Form Factors: Sorting the Choices for Future Telecom Systems

The wide variety of emerging switch fabrics and form factors adds up to a plethora of possible combinations for engineers designing telecom systems. Many people are looking at the future with confusion and consternation about which elements and combinations form the "right" choice. In fact, the term "telecom" describes a range of applications from POTS access to terabit routing, so the different applications will in fact drive different architectural choices.

This white paper will discuss a taxonomy of telecom system types, and then go on to describe which switch fabrics and form factors are appropriate for each. It will also review the evolution and status of the PICMG standards and proposals and how they are being positioned.
