De-Mystifying Signaling Principles Through Modeling and Simulation

Historically, the railway infrastructure in the United Kingdom has been a law unto itself. Its terminology, its standard symbology, and the general approach used by its engineers differs from anywhere else in industry. The railway is an incredibly complex system, and the signaling principles on which it runs are equally complex. This paper examines why this ambiguity exists, why it is a problem, and proposes how it can be solved, using computer aided system modeling and simulation techniques - an approach known as Model Based System Development.
