Abstracting Device Driver Code for Efficient Porting, Testing and Code Reuse

This paper presents how a serial device driver was redesigned using software abstraction via a series of steps. Proper abstraction leads to benefits in more efficient porting, testing, and code reuse. Device drivers are commonly written without sufficient thought given to the work required to create future ports, for testing and code reuse.
