An Efficient Model for Twisted-Pair Cables With Discontinuities and Stubs for Discrete Time Simulations

This paper describes an efficient model for twisted-pair cables suitable for discrete time simulations. The model uses a pole-zero approximation for the cable losses, and a mod-ified s-parameter approach to model the reflections due to dis-continuities and stubs. Use of this model can improve simulation times by a factor of ten compared to using the con-ventional method of including the channel impulse response in a discrete time simulator. Simulation results for a twisted-pair cable network, including a stub, are compared with actual cable measurements.
