PersonalJava technology is the Java technology specifically designed for building web-connectable consumer devices for home, office, and mobile use. It is comprised of a Java virtual machine and a set of Java class libraries specifically targeted for devices such as set-top boxes, web phones and PDA's. In addition, the memory footprint of the PersonalJava application environment has been optimized to run in resource-limited environments while providing near desktop web-fidelity. By implementing the PersonalJava application environment on a device, the device manufacturer gives the consumer the choice of running a wide range of applets and applications written in the Java programming language. Conversely, by writing applets and applications to the PersonalJava API specification, the software developer can be assured of compatibility when running the software on a wide range of consumer devices.
