3/28/2006 - Future Horizons, Europe’s leading semiconductor analyst, today reported that shipments of hard disk drives (HDDs) reached record levels in 2005 of 385 million units.
According to Future Horizons’ 2006 Semiconductor Applications Report, HDD unit volumes are set to more than double by 2010 to 891 million units, fuelled by applications in the digital consumer electronics industry.
Future Horizons believes that the HDD industry has developed adapting to new market applications which has seen the product become smaller, lower power and has greater storage capacity per dollar.
But Future Horizons claims that despite the increase in capacity of HDDs over the last five decades of an average of doubling per annum, this trend has been slowing over the last few years heading to a trend of doubling only every three years.
HDD manufacturers are experiencing a limit to how much they can shrink, mainly because of the motors and other moving parts. But Future Horizons reports that there are still developments underway to reduce the 1-inch and 0.85-inch package sizes to even smaller formats.
“The hard disk drive market is more that 50 years old. But it has been very successful in reinventing itself. Now that disk drives are no longer limited to PCs, but used in digital consumer electronics such as GPS devices, personal video recorders, mobile phones and MP3 players such as the iPod, growth will be more in line with this new consumer market” said Chris Ryan, Semiconductor Market Analyst, Future Horizons.
The Hard Disk Drive market is one of 26 market applications explored, and quantified, in Future Horizons’ 2006 Semiconductor Applications Report. Please see: www.futurehorizons.com/new_web/westmkt/kmreport/kmreport.htm for further information.
