Nucleus Supports Microsoft Media's Transfer Protocol for Digital Devices

2/8/2006 - Accelerated Technology(r), a Mentor Graphics division (Nasdaq: MENT), today announced availability of the Nucleus(r) MTP software. The software allows developers to easily and quickly build Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)-compliant devices used to transfer digital media content such as pictures, music and video to and from a Windows PC.

Increasingly, consumers are sharing digital media data such as photos, MP3 music files, and video between devices. However, most devices today use a variety of protocols, making it difficult for consumers to transfer media data or files. For example, a digital camera transfers picture images using the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), while an MP3 player transfers music files using a proprietary protocol. Additionally, content providers are becoming more concerned about releasing media content to unprotected systems. In order to address the security issue, and help simplify and unify the movement of data files between devices, Microsoft has developed the MTP.

MTP is a set of extensions to PTP, a protocol that allows digital cameras to connect to PCs and printers. MTP broadens PTP coverage from picture images to many digital media types and enables digital rights managements (DRM) protected media content to be securely transferred between media devices. As a result, developers now can use MTP to support the transfer of digital media content across a broad range of media devices and content sharing can be ensured with a high level of protection. MTP also promises to deliver enhanced device management and significant performance improvements for new classes of consumer media devices.

"As digital system manufacturers seek to offer a standardized and more secure method for transferring content between media devices, we are confident that our Nucleus MTP software can serve their needs with support for a variety of MTP-compliant devices, including digital cameras, portable media players, PDAs and cellular phones," said Glen Johnson, product marketing manager, Accelerated Technology, a Mentor Graphics division.

The Nucleus MTP software is independent of the physical interface or transport layer protocol. However, since Universal Serial Bus (USB) offers a simple plug-and-play interface, higher data transfer rates and greater flexibility in terms of hot-swapping, USB is used as a primary physical interface between MTP-compliant media devices.

The first release of the Nucleus MTP software has been integrated with the Nucleus USB function stack and the Nucleus USB function still image class driver. The Nucleus MTP function software enables media devices to be connected and transfer digital media to and from a Windows PC over USB. In the future, the Nucleus MTP host will support an embedded host to use with MTP-compliant media devices.

Pricing and Availability
The Nucleus embedded software is sold in source code format and without royalty fees. Licenses for the Nucleus MTP software begin at U.S. $9,995. For more information, please contact Accelerated Technology at 800-468-6853 or
