9/16/2005 - Concurrent Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: CCUR), a leading provider of integrated computer solutions for mission-critical applications, announced that its German subsidiary has delivered the first of 391 iHawk ATC systems to DFS for the Paperless Strip System (PSS) project. Concurrent iHawk deliveries will total over 2 million $US. The iHawk ATC systems were selected for their high-performance features and customized design that addressed the strict requirements of DFS. The iHawk ATC systems are specifically designed by Concurrent to meet the needs of the air traffic control industry. This iHawk industry solution will be used by DFS as servers and clients driving large-scale computer touch screens at air traffic controller working positions.
The PSS project is a major step for DFS in an effort to provide the most innovative flight plan data handling system for air traffic controllers worldwide. PSS will allow air traffic controllers to replace the paper strips that hold data for all handled flights with a large-scale computer screen that displays virtual strips containing the same layout and information. A 21-inch interactive pen display allows the controllers to directly write information on the virtual strips on the screen with a pen in a manner similar to the current operating procedure.
In contrast to the current time-consuming manual system, complete flight information will be directly available to all other air traffic control subsystems including the Flight Data Processing Systems. Electronic strips can also be transferred to other controller positions without having to carry them physically.
After an extensive review and selection process, Concurrent was chosen as the preferred supplier due to the company's ability to comply with all aspects of the strict commercial requirements and detailed technical specifications. Prior to this project, Concurrent had delivered almost five hundred iHawk systems for other projects at DFS.
"We are excited to further our partnership with DFS. This project represents a major win for us." said Warren Neuburger, COO of Concurrent. "Our high-performance iHawk systems will continue to assist in the vital role of insuring airspace safety at German air traffic control centers."
DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (German Air Navigation Systems) is a State-owned company under private law and has 5370 employees. DFS is entrusted with the safe, orderly and expeditious handling of air traffic control, which includes the development and provision of air navigation services in Germany.
Air traffic controllers handle several thousand aircraft movements a day, and more than 2.7 million movements every year. To this end, DFS operates one of the largest European air traffic control centers in Langen, near Frankfurt, as well as four other radar control centers in Berlin, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS controllers and other specialist staff work at the 17 international airports in Germany, the regional airports Niederrhein and Altenburg-Nobitz as well as at the EUROCONTROL Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Apart from performing day-to-day tasks, the air navigation services also develop air traffic management systems, surveillance systems as well as navigation aids. The company collects flight-related data and uses it for providing its products and services, such as aeronautical maps and charts and its pre-flight information service. In its Academy, the company trains a large number of air traffic controllers every year. In the light of the further consolidation of Europe, DFS is committed to pursuing future-oriented European projects, such as developing a satellite system and a common European database containing flight data.
