Real-Time Innovations Acquires 4TEC BV's SkyBoard, Development Team

9/15/2005 - Real-Time Innovations, Inc. (RTI), a leading provider of software tools and middleware for distributed real-time systems, announced the acquisition of 4TEC BV's SkyBoard intellectual property (IP) and development team.

SkyBoard distributes databases across multiple nodes, enabling performance-critical applications to store and access data from distributed servers at extremely fast rates. SkyBoard provides infrastructure software for real-time information management systems supporting performance-critical applications such as public safety, global communications, aerospace, financials, manufacturing and transportation.

"The 4TEC technologies will be a natural extension of our real-time information networking solution for data-critical applications," said Stan Schneider, Real-Time Innovations' chief executive officer. "This acquisition will enable our embedded and Enterprise customers to offload database operations from their primary servers, speeding data access and reducing network bandwidth requirements. SkyBoard, when fully integrated with RTI's NDDS product, will provide a complete distributed information-management solution for continuously available access to critical data throughout the system."

With the SkyBoard acquisition, RTI now offers unique infrastructure software that acts as a real-time information management system for dynamic, heterogeneous networks. The system supports topologies that continuously change as devices join and leave the network. Greatly improved performance over existing systems makes it possible to develop increasingly demanding applications that encompass an ever-growing number of devices in widely dispersed networks.

Instantly Responsive and Continuously Available
A requirement common to most real-time distributed applications is the need to pass data efficiently between different subsystem modules. The subsystems gather and generate data through interfaces with sensors, monitor and process data, or control other subsystems and communicate with them. The modules may be on different processors or spread across multiple computers connected through a transport mechanism such as Ethernet, shared memory or a backplane such as Virtual Machine Environment (VME).

Under the Object Management Group's (OMG) Data Distribution Service (DDS, V1.0 standard), developers specify various quality-of-service (QoS) parameters such as reliability versus best-effort delivery, expected rates of publication and length of time data is valid throughout the network. Modules sending data become publishers and are only concerned with the specific data type they communicate. Modules needing specific information are subscribers and only need to know about the particular data they wish to receive.

NDDS takes advantage of the capabilities inherent in the Data-Centric Publish-Subscribe (DCPS) model to offer a high-quality implementation developed with the requirements of real-time and embedded systems in mind. In addition, NDDS allows the application to pre-allocate resources, increasing reliability and improving real-time determinism. NDDS minimizes the need for multiple data copies, resulting in improved performance.

About 4TEC BV

About RTI
Real-Time Innovations, Inc. (RTI) the expert in real-time information networking, leads the industry with high performance standards-based software solutions for data-critical applications. Its products and consulting services provide the infrastructure for national railways, air traffic control, traffic monitoring, mission-critical combat systems, financial transaction processing and industrial automation. RTI's flagship product, NDDS, is middleware based on the Object Management Group's (OMG) Data Distribution Service (DDS). NDDS provides the essential foundation for real-time communication in a networked system and enables a new class of embedded to enterprise (e2E) applications. Raytheon, Nikon, Harmonic, Applied Materials, Schneider Automation, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and the US Military rely on RTI technology for their real-time, data-centric, distributed applications. Headquartered in the heart of Silicon Valley since 1991, RTI is a privately held company.
