Informa Announces GSM Middle East, Gulf and North Africa (MEGNA) Show

8/26/2005 - Informa Telecoms and Media, the leading provider of business intelligence and strategic services to the global telecom and media markets, announced that it is ready to host a successful tenth annual GSM Middle East, Gulf and North Africa (MEGNA) conference and exhibition. The event is being held on 11 and 12 September 2005 at the Dubai International Convention Centre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Lectures will focus on 3G potential in the region, as well as customer retention strategies.

"Last year, 43 per cent more industry specialists attended our event than the year before," said Louisa Rogers, Informa Telecoms and Media's marketing director. "This year we are expecting another strong turnout. Our conference and exhibition will update regional operators on the latest GSM trends."

The conference has been endorsed by the GSM Association and the Emirates Telecommunications Corporation Etisalat. The world's leading GSM technology providers, including Convergys, Alcatel, France Telecom, Gemplus, LogicaCMG, Nokia, Oberthur, Orga Systems, Siemens, SIM Alliance, Smart Trust, Vallent, Bharti Telesoft and Intec, are sponsors. The attached exhibition will demonstrate the latest trends in GSM technology, services and solutions.

Informa executives are enthusiastic about the event's agenda and its impressive list of sponsors. "The solid sponsorship this conference and exhibition on GSM in the Middle East, Gulf and North Africa is a testament to the region's enormous GSM potential and its reputation for rapid growth," said Louisa Rogers.

The MEGNA region currently presents its operators with a diverse set of challenges. GSM Subscribers in the region are expected to exceed 120 million by 2009, a growth trend fired particularly by GSM's rapidly expanding popularity in the North African markets. North Africa welcomed 9.1 million new subscribers in 2004. "Additionally, Iraq, Syria and Yemen have been witnessing the highest penetration growth rates in recent years. And in places with already high levels of saturation, like Oman, UAE and Saudi Arabia, industry specialists say it is time to examine what GSM can offer operators in terms of long-term revenue growth." said Informa Telecoms and Media's Senior Analyst for the Middle East and Africa John Everington.

Addressing the question of what happens next in highly saturated areas, representatives from Vallent, a global leader in service assurance solutions, will discuss ways to create differentiation through network and service quality and eye-catching innovations. Intec, a leader in Business and Operations Support Systems, and Bharti Telecom, an end-to-end provider of value-added services, will also focus their presentations on this issue.

In light of last year's successful launch of the region's first 3G networks by MTC-Vodafone Bahrain and the UAE's Etisalat, several presentations will also focus on the future of 3G services in the region. Nokia will discuss how 3G services can improve the region's potential for growth, while Siemens will offer practical planning considerations for a successful 3G rollout. LogicaCMG, a global leader in telecom's products, services and solutions, will address the challenges of 'Charging and Rating on 3G.'

Key representatives of the smart card industry will add their expertise to the conference. Among the companies presenting are SIMalliance, a non-profit organization created to promote the benefits of SIM Cards and SIM-Based services, Oberthur Card System, a world leader in card-based solutions, software, applications and services, Gemplus, the world's leading player in the smart card industry in both revenue and total shipments, and the Smart Trust's, whose technology covers a global footprint comprising more than a quarter of the world's GSM users.

ORGA Systems and Convergys will be on hand to address operators' customer and billing concerns. ORGA's presentation is derived from the company's expertise as the leading expert in mission critical, real-time, convergent billing messaging services as well as card- and device management. Convergys will showcase its solutions for enabling clients to minimise costs and create valuable relationships between clients, customers and employees.

France Telecom, one of the world's leading telecommunications carriers, will question whether mobile carriers really need wholesalers, while Alcatel, a leader in mobile broadband networks, applications and services, will review fixed mobile convergence.

Other exhibiting companies include Subex Systems Ltd, Orga Kartensysteme, SchlumbergerSema, I-mate, Capecon, CSG Systems, LeBLANC Telecommunication Systems, Brighpoint, Telenity, Portal Software, Acotel Group SPA, AXALTO, Consistel Singapore, Actix, Tecore, Evistel, Ferma, PCC, Intelsat, ADC, ip.access ltd, Ericsson, Lifetree Convergence Ltd, Comptel, CISCOM, and Teligent.

"Our GSM in the Middle East, Gulf and North Africa conference and exhibition is not just for executives from within the region," Louisa Rogers added. "It is also an ideal platform for leading network vendors, software developers and operators from outside the Middle East interested in establishing key partnerships with the region's operators," she explained. "There's something here for everyone."
