WinSystems Targets Network-Enabled Applications with PCM-SC520 PC/104 SBC

8/9/2005 - WinSystems introduced their PCM-SC520, a PC/104 compatible single board computer (SBC) based upon the low power, high-integration AMD SC520 CPU. Included on the PCM-SC520 module are 4 serial COM ports and a 10/100 Ethernet controller making it ideal for thin-client and other network-enabled applications. It measures 3.6" x 3.8" (90mm x 96mm) and will run x86-compatible software for space- and power-limited embedded designs over an extended temperature range of -40° to +85°C. The PCM-SC520 is targeted for the industrial telecommunication, homeland security, transportation, data communication, MIL/COTS, and information appliance markets.

The board is based upon the AMD (Sunnyvale, CA) Elan SC520 processor that combines a 32-bit, low-voltage, 133 MHz AM5x86 CPU with a complete set of integrated peripherals that are PC/AT-compatible. The CPU core includes a floating point unit plus enhancements to the PCI controller and Synchronous DRAM controller to optimize it for applications requiring high throughput combined with low latency. The SC520 supports the industry-standard x86 instruction set which allows it to be compatible with the installed base of applications for Linux and other x86-compatible operating systems and executives.

The PCM-SC520 supports 32-, 64-, 128-, or 256-Mbytes of SDRAM. It is field upgradeable since it is mounted in a standard SODIMM socket; however, it can be ordered with up to 32MB of soldered down SDRAM for high shock and vibration applications. Either a CompactFlash card or an M-Systems (Fremont, CA) DiskOnChip® Flash memory device can be installed for solid state disk (SSD) storage of up to 1 GByte. This SSD solution is a viable alternative for fragile floppy and hard disk drives in harsh environmental applications.

The PCM-SC520 also includes an Intel (Sunnyvale, CA) 82559ER integrated Ethernet controller. It has a 32-bit PCI interface and supports 10 and 100 megabit per second data transfers in both full- and half-duplex modes. Four 16C550-compatible UARTs support RS-232 serial data communication up to 115,200 bits per second. RS-422/485 levels are supported on COM 1 & 2. Other peripheral functions supported include: a floppy disk controller, IDE hard disk interface, keyboard controller, line printer (LPT) interface, and mouse port, battery-backed real-time clock, precision power-fail reset circuit, and programmable watchdog-timer.

The PCM-SC520 can operate as a standalone SBC or the system engineer can add either off-the-shelf or user-designed PC/104 expansion I/O modules. Thousands of PC/104 modules are available from hundreds of vendors worldwide to provide a diverse range of I/O functions.

The PCM-SC520 requires only +5V and draws 900 mA (typical.) with 128MB of SDRAM memory installed.
