Wi-LAN and Radionet Power WebNet's Urban Wi-Fi Hot Zone

7/25/2005 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), Radionet OY, Ltd. and WebNet Converged Wireless Network Ltd. (WebNet) announced the launch of WebNet's first urban hotzone deployment in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. Owned and operated by WebNet, the network uses a combination of Wi-LAN high-capacity broadband wireless equipment for backhaul and Radionet's Wi-Fi equipment for last mile connections to enable uninterrupted Wi-Fi connectivity. When complete, the network will offer wireless broadband services to 250,000 residents living in Abbotsford and the neighboring communities of Aldergrove, Mission and Chilliwack, enabling greater bandwidth at lower prices than competing wired solutions, with the added benefit of mobility. WebNet intends to roll out similar broadband wireless networks in other North American cities over the next twelve months.

"The combination of Wi-LAN's and Radionet's broadband wireless solutions enables us to blanket the whole of Abbotsford, including private households and local businesses, with high speed Internet connectivity," said Gregory C. Carrington, Chairman and CEO, WebNet. "After looking into the alternatives on the marketplace, the combination of Wi-LAN and Radionet products proved to be the best solution. Wi-LAN's equipment provides the high-capacity non-line-of-sight capabilities that are needed for backhaul and customers who need high bandwidth. Radionet's robust outdoor equipment provides users with ubiquitous broadband and Wi-Fi access within the coverage area."

WebNet has developed an aggressive plan to develop 125 converged wireless territories in North America. WebNet has done extensive "dark zone" studies throughout the proposed territories. Based on these studies, WebNet is targeting converged wireless territories having a general population base of 200,000 to 500,000 residents, with at least 100,000 serviceable households and about 7,500 to 10,000 business customers, depending on demographics.

"WebNet's North American network deployments will build on the success of our ZONET network, one of the largest Wi-Fi Hotzone networks in the world" said Angela Champness, Chairman, Radionet. "The ZONET network covers 8 cities in Finland bringing mobile broadband connections to where people are located and demonstrates that by using Wi-LAN's solutions for backhaul connections and Radionet's Wi-Fi technology for end user access, large wireless broadband networks can be built quickly and cost-effectively."

"WebNet's model of deployment allows the provisioning of a very low cost Wi-Fi CPE for residential applications utilizing Wi-LAN's solution for backhaul. This makes for a very attractive business case. We expect to see many roll-outs of this type of network over the next year, and look forward to supporting WebNet's North American plans" said Chris Beadle, V.P., Global Sales for Wi-LAN Inc.
