Kontron's CVX Data Server Turns Vehicles into Mobile Server Centers

7/6/2005 - CVX, Kontron's next-generation mobile data server, is equipped with an Intel® 1.7 GHz Mobile Pentium® M processor. The innovative, modularly-constructed mobile computing system is specially developed for use in public and private vehicles. Possible applications include real-time data acquisition and transmission in police, fire, and rescue service vehicles, as well as public safety vehicles of all kinds.

The expansion options are impressive. Besides standard interfaces such as 3x COM, VGA, LAN, FireWire IEEE 1394, and USB 2.0, the CVX also has a CompactFlash slot, a free Mini-PCI slot (for integrated 802.11g WLAN), and a half-size PCI slot. This modularity enables the user or OEM to convert the box or embedded system into a digital video recorder (DVR), for example, or adapt it to any other application. The removable hard disk ensures data security. An optional CD-ROM or DVD drive can be installed in place of the PCI slot.

With its tripartite, modular and space-saving design, the CVX allows placement of the monitor and keyboard close to the user, while the server is stowed away in the luggage space, under the seat, in a storage space, or another area outside of the passenger compartment.

The key specifications of the CVX include the 1.7 GHz Intel® Pentium® M processor, 40 GB swappable hard drive (expandable to 80 GB), 512MB DRAM (upgradeable to 1 GB), and 32 MB graphics DRAM. The monitor options for the LVDS port include a 1,400 nit 12.1“ touchscreen or a 1,200 nit 10.4“ touchscreen, both with 800 x 600 SGVA resolution. Kontron’s resistive matrix touchscreens were developed so that they remain functional even if they are damaged. A second monitor with a different resolution can be connected parallel to the LVDS monitor via the VGA output. A full-size keyboard with an airtight mouse and eight-level background lighting for use in twilight or darkness further enhance the user-friendly features.

The CVX server meets the Mil-Std 810F standards for shock, vibration, and temperature resistance. Its robust and modular aluminum construction offers protection for the internal subsystems. The fanless cooling system in the CVX allows operating temperatures between -15°C and 60°C. An optional heatable hard drive is available for colder regions.

Operating system support is offered for Windows 2000 Professional and XP Pro.

The CVX is available now from Kontron or authorized dealers. Prices for entry-level models are around EUR 2,320 (final price depends on options, specifications, and order volume).
