6/2/2005 - Accelerated Technology, a Mentor Graphics division (Nasdaq: MENT), announced a new class driver for the Nucleus(r) USB software, which provides Universal Serial Bus (USB) support for the Nucleus Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). The Nucleus USB Still Image class driver allows developers to create generic still image capture device drivers to be able to interconnect digital photography products, such as digital cameras, over a USB interface.
USB offers plug-and-play interfaces, higher data transfer rates, and greater flexibility in terms of hot-swapping capabilities. As a result, it is rapidly being adopted by imaging capture device manufacturers as a transport mechanism for implementing the PIMA 15740 photography standard, Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP).
The PTP standard provides connectivity and interface functions that allow digital cameras to be more consumer friendly. For example, digital photographs can be sent directly from the camera to other digital still photograph devices such as a host computer, disk storage or printer using PTP as a single, common and purpose-designed communication protocol. PTP is platform and transport independent so it can be implemented on different transport media such as USB, IEEE 1384, Infrared Data Association (IrDA) or Internet Protocol (IP).
The Nucleus USB Still Image class driver incorporates the USB interface for still image capture devices along with PTP and enables an embedded product to be used with USB and PTP-compliant imaging devices. The Nucleus USB Function Still Image class driver also allows the creation of embedded peripheral devices that are USB and PTP compliant. Additionally, the PTP application program interface (API) provided in the Nucleus USB Still Image class driver, allows developers to access PTP-based imaging features for developing special image applications, such as presentations on a digital monitor that takes pictures directly from the camera.
Availability and Pricing
The Nucleus embedded software is licensed with source code and without royalty fees. Available now, licenses for the Nucleus USB software start at U.S. $14,995 and licenses for the class drivers begin at U.S. $2,995. The new Nucleus USB Still Image class driver has been released for use with Nucleus USB host stack, which is USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 compliant.
