4/18/2005 - TEK Microsystems, Inc. of Chelmsford MA and QinetiQ of Malvern, UK announced the new Quixilica Venus VXS-1, the newest member of the Quixilica Family of 6U VME products and the only VXS product to combine FPGA technology with five high-resolution analog to digital conversion channels. The Venus VXS-1 is ideally suited to advanced, multi-channel sensor data acquisition and processing applications such as electronic warfare, signals intelligence, and radar. The combination of high channel count and tightly coupled FPGA processing resources significantly reduces the total board count and cost for front-end signal processing functions. In addition, the VXS architecture provides the bandwidth and scalability to build a wide range of solutions – from single card systems to 80 channel array processors – using modular, open standard building blocks such as Venus.
According to Dr. Bill Smith manager of the Real Time Embedded Systems group at QinetiQ, “The QinetiQ Venus card’s five 105 MHz ADCs, large FPGA and VXS high speed serial data links are ideally suited to Communications Electronic Support Measures (CESM) applications. Ever increasing amounts of the Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum are being used requiring CESM systems to survey and present growing quantities of information. Venus enables highly dense front-end processing to funnel data to arrays of more classical processors as well as reducing Size, Weight and Power (SWAP). Using Venus in one such system has reduced the VME card count by 80%, representing a significant cost and SWAP saving.”
Venus is part of the QinetiQ Quixilica VXS family of FPGA based processing hardware which provides a complete range of flexible A/D and D/A products in the VITA 41.0 VXS form factor. VXS adds a high-speed connector to VME boards to support switched fabric interconnects such as Infiniband, Serial RapidIO, and PCI Express with data rates up to 2.5 GB/s for each 6U payload slot. Venus couples high performance analog and digital I/O front ends with a scalable FPGA based processing architecture. Memory and inter-processor communications resources have been optimized to address the requirements of very high performance real time digital signal processing applications. The use of a common FPGA architecture and software API allows applications to easily migrate between different Quixilica solutions, protecting the user’s investment in both FPGA IP and application software.
“VXS gives us high-bandwidth, off-board communication while making it easy for customers to integrate Venus into their system level applications,” said Andrew Reddig, president and CTO of TEK Microsystems, Inc. “In addition to the five A/D channels and FPGA processing capability, the use of VXS technology allows Venus to support applications that need access to both raw and processed data from all five A/D’s at the full sample rate. Developers can now build very high channel count systems without sacrificing the open standard interoperability that our customers require.”
As a part of the Quixilica family of products, the Venus card is available with a wide range of IP cores either as pre-integrated solutions or as modular IP functions for integration with the user’s application-specific IP. Available IP cores include FFT, digital receiver, digital filter, QR decomposition and floating point library functions. The Virtex II Pro V2P70 FPGA on the Venus card provides 33,000 logic slices, allowing a wide range of functions to be implemented within the single FPGA device.
TEK Microsystems will integrate Venus into its advanced signal processing and data recording systems and will market Venus directly through its distribution channels in the USA and Canada. Tekmicro and QinetiQ will also offer a range of development kits, FPGA cores and software required for maximum development efficiency.
The Quixilica Venus VXS-1 is available from TEK Microsystems 60 days ARO. Pricing starts at $18,900 for single unit quantities.
