Kontron Upgrades ReVolution Robust Outdoor Notebook and Tablet PC

3/28/2005 - Kontron AG has upgraded the ReVolution, its combination robust outdoor notebook and tablet PC. The processor is now an Intel® Pentium® M 1.4 GHz CPU, inside a shock- and vibration-resistant magnesium housing which reliably protects the entire system from a fall of up to 90 cm (MIL-STD-810 standard). The energy-saving processor considerably extends the time that the convertible PC can operate on battery, between charges. Also, the ReVolution is now able to communicate faster, as the LAN interface transmits at Gigabit speed, while the WLAN operates at 56 Mbit/s in accordance with 802.11.g rather than the previous 11 Mbit/s. Kontron has equipped the 3.5 kg system with a new Firewire interface. The IP54- and NEMA3-certified ReVolution is protected against dust and spray.

The highlight of convertible PCs such as the ReVolution is the 180-degree display hinge of the TFT Panel housing. The unique hinge allows the ReVolution to be used as a standard notebook or by rotating the screen by 180 degrees, to be used as tablet. The combination of robust tablet PC and notebook for tough outdoor use in one housing means the ReVolution is ideal for all applications where both the workplace and the operating conditions change frequently. Classic users of this are service technicians or field engineers at construction sites, for example. Outside, you need weather-resistant that is easy to handle and, in the office, a fully-fledged computer to accomplish your administrative tasks.

In addition to these new features, the ReVolution comes with all its traditional specifications, including up to 1 GB RAM. The unit can be configured with either a 40 or 60 GB removable hard drive. Two USB 2.0 ports and an RS232 interface are available for connecting peripheral devices. At close range, the ReVolution transmits over both WLAN and, additionally, Bluetooth. If necessary, the built-in modem can dial the ReVolution directly into the conventional telephone network. Two type II PC card slots (or one type III) take cards to expand functions, such as those for UMTS connectivity. An Intel 855 controller with 32 MB shared video RAM provides attractive graphics. The 12.1 inch TFT display also comes in a version with a transradiant display optimized for use in bright sunlight. For darker environments, the keyboard offers optional backlighting.

The built-in microphone allows voice input, while the integrated stereo speakers provide sound. The lithium-ion battery in the right-hand slide-in bay of the ReVolution reliably provides the energy-saving Pentium M and the other system components with over three and a half hours of power. If that isn't enough, the left-hand slide-in bay can also hold a battery to which the user can switch during operation via hotswap, thus extending the operating time without connection to an electric outlet to 7 hours. If the second battery isn't needed, the bay can also accept a second hard drive, CD-ROM, DVD or floppy drive. Thus, the ReVolution can be adapted to a wide variety of uses.

Kontron, robust and mobile
The ReVolution is part of a complete range of products that offers mobile rugged systems for almost every use. This includes sturdy Pentium M notebooks or car computers as well as lunchbox PCs with 6 PCI slots, or test and measurement platforms for outdoor use in any climate. Kontron has just expanded its range of products with the purchase of the American company Dolch Computer Systems. While, up until now, Kontron has primarily addressed OEMs in markets such as transportation, police and other areas of public safety with its mobile systems, Dolch has direct customers in the defense industry, the public sector and utility companies.
