3/22/2005 - As of February 25, 2005, Kontron acquired 100 percent of Dolch Computer Systems Inc., Fremont, California. With the takeover of Dolch, Kontron reinforce their presence in the segments of defense, public safety, gas and oil, test & measurement, and data acquisition, and round off their product portfolio to include professional portable computers for extreme environments. The acquisition is highly complimentary to both organizations. Kontron embedded solutions are well suited for Dolch platforms, thereby leveraging for Dolch customers the expertise and reliability built into Kontron's long-life products. The additional capability of Dolch to develop and deliver custom solutions will strengthen Kontron's leading position in providing rugged computing solutions.
"This investment presents an excellent opportunity for Kontron to further expand its embedded computer solutions in the USA and Europe on mobile platforms for government and defense programs," states Hannes Niederhauser, CEO of Kontron. "There is a natural fit within the Kontron group, as Kontron primarily manufactures embedded computer boards and rugged mobile computers, while Dolch offers expertise in military programs and rugged designs."
Kontron's rugged embedded designs are particularly attractive to OEMs for end markets such as transportation, police and other public safety segments, but not as established in government and defense programs. Every branch of the American military uses Dolch products designed and tested to military specifications. The Dolch reputation and experience are what make their workstations and portable computers the choice for such programs as the Navy Marine Corps Internet (NMCI).
The global market for rugged mobile computers is rapidly growing, with an expected CAGR of up to 20% in some segments over the coming years. New technologies such as UMTS will provide these products with much more connectivity, and trigger new applications. Low power designs based on Intel® Pentium® M and XScale technology, as well as enhanced battery and power management solutions , will lead to more efficient products and enhanced customer satisfaction.
With this acquisition, "the professionals of Dolch gain the backing of a financially secure global leader, and access to state-of-the-art embedded technology to bring leading edge performance and reliability to their traditional market base," according to Mark Swiecicki, Kontron's Director of Mobile Computers for EMEA. And the benefits go both ways. "Having the rugged design savvy and sales focus of the Dolch team on our side is going to give a tremendous boost to Kontron's ability to bring innovation into markets demanding greater mobility and connectivity," he said.
With strategically placed sales channels and production in Europe, Asia, Canada, and the USA, Kontron is able to support customers world-wide. Thus, Dolch and their customers will also benefit from Kontron's sales and logistics channels in Asia.
All in all, this acqusition will help leading OEMs, systems integrators and application providers to reduce their time-to-market significantly, gain an additional competitive edge, as well as add to the success of Kontron and its customers.
