3/18/2005 - OpenLogic, Inc., the leading provider of software and services that enable development and IT organizations to easily create and manage their own integrated, commercial-grade Open Source development and deployment environments, announced that it has released version 3.1 of its BlueGlue Open Source Infrastructure Management Suite. BlueGlue is the first software that automates the reliable installation, configuration, integration, test and maintenance of certified and supported stacks built from customer-specified combinations of over 100 leading Open Source projects. It helps customers substantially reduce management costs and complexity when using Open Source software.
Highlights of the 3.1 release include more robust web framework support, new Eclipse Plug-ins and new enterprise risk management capabilities. In addition, the 3.1 release includes updates to version 3.0 projects, providing the latest stable versions, bug fixes and security patches. Version 3.1 adds 9 new Open Source projects and 6 new sample applications for a total of over 125 Open Source projects and sample applications.
"BlueGlue has helped us to substantially reduce costs and improve our development schedules. The software, documentation, knowledgebase and sample applications are all tremendously valuable in improving development team productivity and the quality of our open source infrastructure," said Chip Anderson, President of StockCharts.com.
Robust Web Framework Support
Version 3.1 includes more choice and time saving tools for developers of Web applications. Spring, Tapestry, WebWork, and JSF/MyFaces have been added to Struts for a total of five popular web frameworks to choose from. Also, the DisplayTag library and web application testing tools JWebUnit and StrutsTestCase have been added. Finally, five new sample applications allow developers to easily compare the five different frameworks to help choose which is best for a given project. OpenLogic sample applications help kick-start development and learning.
Improved Eclipse and Maven Features
Version 3.1 adds two new Eclipse Plug-ins, part of OpenLogic's strategy to continue enhancing Eclipse support. Also, a new sample application for Maven has been added in addition to significant enhancements to two existing Maven sample applications.
New Open Source Enterprise Risk Management Capabilities
In order to manage legal risk around use of open source software, some enterprise customers prefer to limit the types of Open Source projects available to their development and IT organizations. With version 3.1, enterprises can obtain a customized version of BlueGlue tailored to their compliance needs. Companies can limit Open Source project usage to what has been approved by corporate policy, whether it is by license type, project type, etc. There is also the flexibility to have different subsets available by department or group.
Updates to Existing Projects: Integrated, Tested, and Ready to Go
With every version of BlueGlue, customers get the latest stable Open Source project versions, including the latest bug fixes and security patches. OpenLogic's multi-phase testing and integration process ensures that customer-specified combinations of projects can be automatically installed and integrated in minutes using the BlueGlue software on a workstation or server.
"Enterprises are facing real complexity and cost of ownership issues as they try to take advantage of Open Source software beyond the operating system. Solutions like BlueGlue are very helpful in eliminating those issues and preserving the cost savings of open source," said Gary Hein, Analyst for the Burton Group.
