3/16/2005 - Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII) announced the introduction of the Digi ConnectTM Remote Gateway (RG) GSM, the industry's first serial-to-wireless GSM EDGE gateway that connects remote serial devices via Cingular's high speed wireless GSM network. The Digi Connect" RG GSM provides a cost effective and widely available connectivity alternative for devices with serial ports, such as power meters, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), traffic controllers, security panels, industrial Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and more. The product extends the company's line of remote device management solutions which includes the recently announced Digi Connect" WAN GSM, an Ethernet-to-wireless gateway. Digi's remote device management solutions are ideal for networking devices at remote sites where it is difficult or expensive to secure wireline connectivity.
"Digi has been the market leader in serial device connectivity for 20 years," said Larry Kraft, vice president of America's sales and global marketing, Digi International. "With the Digi Connect RG" GSM, we're leveraging this vast experience to make remote wireless networking easy for devices with serial ports. Combined with our recently announced Digi Connect" WAN GSM, we now offer high-speed wireless connectivity for serial or Ethernet-based devices as well as remote sites with Ethernet networks."
The Digi Connect" RG GSM is an intelligent gateway that allows remote devices to communicate with applications across high speed digital wireless networks. It is the first serial-to-wireless gateway to utilize EDGE technology and takes advantage of Cingular's high-speed EDGE network, the fastest national wireless data network in the U.S. The Digi Connect" RG GSM operates at average speeds up to 135 kbps (kilobits per second) and supports Class 10 EDGE technology. Cingular Wireless' EDGE network is available in 13,000 cities and towns and along nearly 40,000 miles of interstate highways across the country.
"The introduction of the Digi Connect" RG GSM device opens up Cingular's Wireless WAN Connectivity Service to an expanded group of users because they now have a choice between a serial or Ethernet connection to link their IT network to our EDGE-based wireless offering," said Hamish Caldwell, executive director, Cingular Wireless Business Markets Group. "The Digi line of intelligent gateways in conjunction with the Wireless WAN Connectivity Service from Cingular provide an ideal high-speed wireless back-up or primary solution for applications for such areas as utilities, traffic management, and industrial automation."
The Digi Connect" RG gateway is supported by the Digi Connectware" Manager, an enterprise-class management platform that provides customers with the ability to manage thousands of devices and their wireless connections. Digi Connectware makes it easier to deploy and administer any number of remote devices wirelessly, in a secure, easy to use, scalable fashion.
The Digi Connect" RG GSM combines Digi's traditional serial-to-IP device server functionality with intelligent, high-speed cellular communications. Its offers local intelligence with features such as TCP/UDP socket connections, unique Digi Surelink" for "always on" connections, DHCP support and access control lists. Additionally, the Digi Connect" RG GSM includes Digi's patented Realport® COM port redirection technology to make a remote device appear local even though it is located across a cellular network.
