Fujitsu Debuts First Small Form Factor SAS Enterprise Hard Disk Drive

3/11/2005 - Fujitsu Europe Limited, one of the world’s leading suppliers of hard disk drives and computer peripherals, announced that it has delivered the MAV2036RC (36GB) and the MAV2073RC (73GB) hard disk drives to leading storage manufacturers. This announcement marks the industry’s first production-level small form factor (SFF) serial attached SCSI (SAS) 3Gb/second hard disk drives. The new SFF SAS configuration offers lower power consumption than competing hard disk drives with a mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) rating of 1.4 million power-on hours, suitable to meet demanding enterprise application requirements.

Fujitsu expects SAS to become the enterprise interface of choice for both 3.5” enterprise hard disk drives and the new 2.5” small form factor enterprise hard disk drives. The new form factor and interface combination allows users to significantly increase I/O performance by increasing storage density whilst decreasing power consumption. The smaller footprint also allows for increased spatial efficiency for improved performance by allowing more spindles to be deployed in the same space as 3.5” drives.

In December 2003, Fujitsu Limited delivered the first prototype SFF SAS hard disk drives to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) - offering advanced storage solutions the increased performance associated with SAS. Due to the quality and flexibility of the original design and working closely with its OEM partners, Fujitsu has been able to deliver the SFF SAS production-level hard disk drives ahead of the competition.

“By being a key hard disk drive supplier to the leading manufacturers, Fujitsu and our strategic partners are now one step closer to offering new storage systems that incorporate the size, cost and performance advantages of this next generation serial technology,” said Andrew Batty Director of Sales and Marketing Fujitsu Europe Limited. “In the past year, Fujitsu has been working closely with strategic partners, participating in interoperability plugfests, and following an engineering timeline that ensures our customers are ready to deploy SAS in the enterprise in 2005, these new enterprise drives can also be seen at CeBIT on Fujitsu’s stand in Hall 1 Stand 7F 1.”
