Microchip Develops Low Power A/D Converters with 22-bit Resolution

11/15/2005 - Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, introduced the MCP3551 and MCP3553 delta-sigma, analog-to-digital (A/D) converters with 22-bit resolution. These devices are among the lowest in power consumption in the industry and are available in an 8-pin MSOP package, making them one of the smallest high-resolution A/D converters on the market today. These delta-sigma devices further expand Microchip's broad line of SAR, dual-slope, and display A/D converters.

The MCP3551 and MCP3553 delta-sigma A/D converters feature low current consumption of 120 microamps typical, which provides longer battery life for consumer, industrial, portable, and battery-powered applications. The small MSOP package (3.1 mm x 3.1 mm x 1.18 mm) is ideal for space-constrained applications. The 22-bit resolution provides highly accurate measurements for consumer, industrial, and instrumentation applications.

In addition, these devices offer Integral Nonlinearity (INL) of ±2 ppm typical, power consumption of 0.85 milliwatts maximum at 5 volts, and output noise as low as 2.5 microvolts root mean square (RMS). They also offer auto calibration with every conversion, and an extended temperature range of -40 degrees Celsius to +125 degrees Celsius. The MCP3551 has a sample rate of 13.75 samples per second and an effective resolution of 21.9 bits. The MCP3553 has a sample rate of 60 samples per second and an effective resolution of 20.6 bits.

The MCP3551 and MCP3553 A/D converters target a variety of applications, including industrial (instrumentation, pressure sensors, weigh scales, handheld meters and multimeters), medical (heart rate monitors and blood glucose meters), consumer (weigh scales and handheld meters), and automotive (sensor interface).

To help engineers get started, and to demonstrate the effectiveness of these delta-sigma A/D converters, Microchip is offering the MCP3551 Delta-Sigma ADC PICtailä Demonstration Board (Part # MCP355XDM-PCTL) at a price of $35.

Pricing and Availability
The MCP3551 and MCP3553 are available today for sampling and volume production. Pricing for each device in 10,000-unit quantities is $2.67 in the 8-pin MSOP package and $2.64 in the 8-pin SOIC package. All device packaging is lead (Pb) free.
