McAfee and Good Technology Strengthen Wireless Handheld Security

11/15/2005 - McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), the leader in Intrusion Prevention and Security Risk Management, and Good Technology, Inc., the leading provider of industry standards-based enterprise handheld computing software and service, announced a partnership and agreement to enable enterprises to distribute McAfee® VirusScan® Mobile entirely over-the-air to smartphones, using Good's Secure OTATM technology. VirusScan Mobile will now be readily available as a partner application for over-the-air distribution via the GoodLink Management Console, and the companies will work together to continually ensure handhelds can get the latest McAfee software using Good’s Secure OTA capability. As enterprises scale their smartphone deployments, the combination of McAfee VirusScan Mobile and Good’s end-to-end security architecture will better enable enterprises to maintain employee productivity, protect corporate data from malware attacks and enforce corporate compliance.

"As mobile devices become an important repository for corporate data as well as a growing point of Internet and network connectivity, they require the same level of protection that’s now become a standard for laptops and desktops," said Drew Carter, senior product manager, McAfee Mobile Initiatives. "Good Technology’s Secure OTA technology combined with McAfee VirusScan Mobile, the most comprehensive mobile virus security solution, extends that standard to wireless handhelds, enabling enterprises to ensure the safety of their mission critical data with minimal effort and cost to IT."

With a rapidly broadening base of mobile device users and an increasing amount of corporate data and IP residing outside the firewall, enterprises are more challenged than ever to manage and reduce information risk; comply with data protection legislation; enforce consistent implementation of security policies across heterogeneous devices, carrier, and application environments; and ensure up-to-date security regardless of location.

McAfee® offers mobile security solutions that have been architected, designed and implemented specifically for manufacturers, carriers, enterprises and the consumer market.

Its flagship product, McAfee VirusScan Mobile, provides advanced scanning, detection and cleaning of handheld data to prevent corruption due to viruses, worms, dialers, Trojans, battery-sapping malware, and other malicious code. VirusScan Mobile protects devices against the threats that originate from e-mail, instant messaging, and Internet downloads, and protects multiple entry points including SMS, MMS, and Bluetooth. Up-to-date protection is delivered as soon as threats are identified through McAfee’s leading research organization, AVERT®.

Using a combination of Good’s Secure OTA application management technology and Good Mobile Defense, IT managers will now be able to automatically and conveniently push out and enforce VirusScan Mobile on handhelds, without requiring end users to ever part with their devices.

"Data is a mission critical enterprise asset, and our customers demand complete data protection," said Rick Osterloh, vice president, products, Good Technology. "Through the combination of Good Mobile Defense, Secure OTA and industry standards-focused partners such as McAfee, we are enabling IT to easily and cost-effectively achieve a new level of handheld security and corporate policy enforcement."
