1/19/2005 - QNX Software Systems announced a board support package (BSP) that combines the reliability and scalability of the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS with the high performance of the Freescale PowerQUICC III 8560ADS reference platform, a board powered by the Freescale MPC8560 processor. By integrating QNX Neutrino and the Freescale PowerQUICC III 8560ADS reference platform, the BSP provides networking and communications designers with a complete, off-the-shelf package to jump-start system development and reduce time-to-market.
With the new BSP, QNX demonstrates its ongoing support for high-performance communications processors. The Freescale MPC8560 is a versatile integrated communications microprocessor that can be used in a variety of networking applications. With its PowerPC architecture, the Freescale MPC8560 CPU processor delivers higher performance in all areas of device operation, including greater flexibility, extended capabilities, and higher integration.
The QNX Neutrino RTOS provides a high-availability framework within a memory-protected microkernel architecture. With QNX Neutrino's patented distributed processing capabilities, users can simplify the design of their fault-resilient systems and achieve maximum scalability. In addition, QNX offers support for Freescale MPC8560 RapidIO capabilities with its transparent distributed processing, allowing developers to leverage a proven interprocess communication capability, ultimately reducing risk and total cost of ownership. Together with the Freescale platform, QNX Neutrino and QNX transparent distributed processing provide networking and communications equipment manufacturers with a flexible, off-the-shelf package for developing scalable, future-ready products.
"Today's fast-paced networking marketplace demands a solution that works out of the box so developers can reach market in the shortest time possible," said Sebastien Marineau, senior networking architect and development manager, QNX Software Systems. "The combination of the QNX Neutrino and transparent distributed processing with the MPC8560 RapidIO capabilities enables equipment manufacturers to deliver high-performance, highly scalable, distributed systems, while lowering total cost of ownership."
The QNX BSP for the Freescale PowerQUICC III 8560ADS and 8540ADS reference platforms is the first demonstration of QNX's ongoing support of the PowerQUICC III family. The company plans to support additional processors, including the PowerQUICC III MPC8555 and the PowerQUICC III MPC8548.
The BSP for the Freescale PowerQUICC III 8560ADS and 8540ADS reference platforms will be available in February 2005.
